STARTING POINT
Today's Family room is the combination of media center, library and dining and entertainment spot for the family to relax together, do homework and be together and connect.

Family room is the most popular room of the house because of a range of activities occurring there simultaneously. Family room should look warm, intimate and fairly relaxed.
ARRANGEMENT: This room usually has large windows, skylights and doors leading to patio. It usually includes large comfortable chairs, L- shaped sofas, built in cabinets for keeping the television set music system, books and papers etc. Cabinets also help the room to look clutter free. Arrange the seating area around a focal point such as fireplace, a bookcase wall or a TV. If the TV and the fireplace are competing for attention, place the TV next to the fireplace or on the wall next to it. You can always have diagonal group seating to face both the TV and the fireplace. If the two are at two opposite ends, have two groups of seating with their own focal point.

STYLE
Family room can be any style. It could be country casual, contemporary or colonial. Choose any of the styles that suit you best and goes well with the rest of the house. To get a country look add moldings to the doors and walls and also by running the wall paper border at the ceiling. Oakwood cabinets looks well in a country setting.
For a casual look an eclectic mix of furnishings and accessories is more relaxing than carefully matched set. Always pick a dominant fabric pattern that inspires you and mix and match around it.

COLOR
A family room can be of any color desired, keeping in mind that colors of the kitchen and dining room influence in choosing the color scheme for this room. As these three rooms are called the great- rooms, they can be unified with the use of color. If the rooms are small, try to use the same type of flooring and the color. To avoid contrast, try to use the color from the same family. Color relate the windows and the wall treatment. Repeat fabrics and accent color throughout the three rooms to give them a balanced look. As a lot of time is spent in this room, use the colors that are restful.
