BASIC
Many times Modern and Contemporary styles are confused to be one and the same thing. Modern is a distinct style of the 20's and lasted till the 60's. It did not have any historic influences and was mostly geometric in design. Materials used were modern such as glass, leather, chrome and it was a very functional style. The design was pure and simple. There was no use of ornamentation such as carving or hand painting. One of the famous architects of this time was Frank Lloyd Wright.

Contemporary is a combination of trends and new technology. It is a mixture of various periods and trends, which is combined in a fresh and exciting way. Elements such as columns, arches, stone and marble are all incorporated in a contemporary setting. Detailing such as arched windows, decorative moldings, carved fireplace mantle among others is used in a contemporary setting. All these elements borrowed from the past are put in the contemporary setting, but in a restrained way just enough to soften a look and bring the setting to life. Nothing is done in excess. Contemporary style is more of a tailored look like the overstuffed big sofa, which is eye-catching, comfortable and very functional. This style is more about comfort, function and personal style combined with new and exciting materials.
Colors used are bright, a wide range of neutrals to balance out the brights. Furniture is made from materials like laminates, concrete etc. Ethnic fabric and patterns are used. Colorful rugs and unusual accessories are used.
